As part of COP29, the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Ms. Anacláudia Rossbach, visited Baku to explore some of the strategic urban planning, cultural, and ecological transformation projects that define the capital's rich history and future.

 

Ms. Rossbach, accompanied by the Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, Anar Guliyev, toured several key sites: the ancient Icherisheher, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the architectural marvel Heydar Aliyev Center; “White City,” an exemplary case of ecological rehabilitation and comprehensive urban development of former industrial zones; the Yasamal Residential Complex, a project by the State Housing Construction Agency (MIDA) ensuring housing accessibility; and the newly developed Central Park, which serves as the “lungs” of the city.

 

The distinguished guest highly appreciated Azerbaijan's sensitive and successful approach to preserving historical-architectural heritage, implementing human-centered urban solutions, and addressing climate and urban agendas in an integrated and comprehensive manner. She expressed confidence in the success of the transformation and development projects to be continued under Baku’s new Master Plan.

 

The UN-Habitat Executive Director emphasized that the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), to be held in Baku in 2026, would provide an excellent opportunity for thousands of international participants to witness Azerbaijan's achievements in promoting sustainable and healthy urban development.
