Dear architects!

It is my great honor to address you all on this very special occasion - World Architecture Day. This day, while symbolizing the solidarity of architects worldwide, also draws our attention to the invaluable role of architecture in human life, in the development of cultures, and in the formation of the urban environment around us.

Architecture is far more than the art of building – it is the art of imagining the future, harmonizing culture, nature, and technology in a way that elevates human life. Every line drawn, every structure designed, and every urban plan realized tells the story of our shared identity, our values, and our aspirations.

Azerbaijan’s rich architectural heritage - from the ancient monuments preserved in our cities such as Shusha, Ganja, Nakhchivan, Baku and many others to the modern landmarks that define our skyline - stands as a testament of the creativity and professionalism of those who dedicated their lives to this art.

Today, architecture is experiencing a new dynamic stage of development. The modern understanding of architecture is closely linked with “green” technologies, “smart” infrastructure, and the principles of sustainable urban planning. Azerbaijani architects, while preserving rich traditions, are mastering leading international trends by bringing a new ecological and technological breath to the art through their projects, combining aesthetic beauty with functionality, and prioritizing human-centered approaches in contemporary urban design.

It is no secret that the ongoing large-scale urban renewal and reconstruction processes in our country demand the knowledge and skills of architects. I would particularly like to emphasize that the restoration and construction projects carried out in the territories liberated from occupation under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Victorious Commander-in-Chief Mr. Ilham Aliyev. The application of technological innovations, the synthesis of national architectural traditions with modernity, and the human-centered urban planning once again underline the strategic importance of architecture. Therefore, our architects are actively participating in the design of cities and villages in Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur, harmonizing historical heritage with modernity and implementing ecological and innovative solutions.

We are extremely proud that our capital Baku will host the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in May 2026 - a milestone event that underscores Azerbaijan’s rising role in global urban discourse and offers invaluable opportunities for architects and urban planners worldwide. The Forum is the global platform for dialogue on urbanization, which brings together architects, urban planners, researchers, visionaries, and many others from all around the world. Urban safety and resilience are the challenges of utmost importance globally and it is not a coincidence that the theme of the WUF13 is “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities”. I am sure that this global event will be another great opportunity for capacity building, learning and also for the international community of architects and urban planners to connect, bring and share their innovative methods.
